We truly believe we are stronger together. This year’s Homeward Bound cohort is made up of those who are self funded, partly self-funded/work-funded and fully work funded. For those who are self funded, many are raising money for their place. We would love you to look...
I’ve just wrapped up the first part of an experience like no other. It all began in June 2019, when I was selected for the fifth cohort Homeward Bound (HB), a global leadership program for women in STEM. This connects likeminded women from around the globe for an intensive online leadership program that culminates with a voyage to Antarctica.

Most tsunamis are caused by earthquakes, but a significant percentage (about 15%) are caused by landslides or volcanoes. Some of these may be interlinked – for example, landslide tsunamis are often triggered by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. But does climate change also play a role? #TeamHB6’s Jane Cunneen is a geologist specialising in plate tectonics, geophysics, earthquakes, tsunamis, and natural hazard mitigation.
Women remain underrepresented in emergency medicine and in the niche fields of wilderness and high altitude medicine. We need women leaders as role models, and the women leaders we have need to actively raise up the next generation.
Rampant gender bias aside, one of the most concerning aspects of scientific funding trends in Australia is that already well-established investigators are being funded at the expense of those who are still developing as leaders. In essence, scientists are eating their young.
“You can give women leaders the best training in leadership, strategy and science, but if they don’t know how to make themselves seen and their real capability remains invisible, then all that potential might go to waste. And we simply don’t have time for that to happen.” So say the directors of Visibility Co, the team behind Homeward Bound’s visibility stream.
Something happened to Podcaster Samantha Hodder as she dug into the tapes of the Homeward Bound inaugural voyage to Antarctica: “It gave me a magical feeling that I was virtually participating in this experience. This feeling stayed with me, and gave me the grist to turn what was meant to be a 20 minute story, into an almost four-hour serialized storytelling podcast – This Is Our Time.”
Applications for the 7th cohort of the Homeward Bound women in STEMM leadership initiative are now open.
Homeward Bound founder Fabian Dattner encourages men and women everywhere to be more as leaders and to expect and ask for more from leaders above them.
