Dr Bernal is part of the Ecosystem Services Unit at Winrock International, where she applies science-based approaches oriented to build capacity in creating resilient and sustainable communities, and in mitigating climate change. Her work includes developing user-friendly decision support tools and technical guidance oriented to assist governments and stakeholders to assess the benefits of ecosystem conservation and restoration, develop climate change mitigation actions in the land use and land cover sector, and make natural resources management decisions based on science. As a wetland scientist with a biogeochemistry background, she also investigates carbon sequestration strategies in freshwater and coastal wetlands around the world, nutrient cycling, and ecosystem response to environmental change.
