Deb was encouraged by a high school teacher to participate in a health careers awareness program. She shadowed a surgeon and realised her love of needlework could be used in a profession and embarked on the long road to become a trauma surgeon. She joined the Air Force to fund her education, and ultimately this allowed her to practice surgery and teach on five continents. She currently teaches and practices surgery at the University of Texas Health, San Antonio. She loves reading, hiking, traveling and revelling in the beauty of simple things when outside.
