Dr Kerr completed a Bachelor of Science majoring in Chemistry and Microbiology at La Trobe University in 2013 and subsequently completed her Bachelor of Science Honours (2014) and PhD (2017) in Chemistry at Deakin University with Professor Paul Francis. In 2016, Emily received an Endeavour Scholarship (Australian Government, Department of Education and Training) to work with Professor George Whitesides (Harvard University and Diagnostics for All) for 12 months learning about the development of low-cost, point-of-care diagnostics. After completing her Endeavour Fellowship and PhD, Dr Kerr returned to Australia to undertake a post-doctoral fellowship with Professor Nicolas Voelcker (Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) to develop electrochemical biosensors for the on-site detection of viral pathogens.
Dr Kerr currently holds an Early Career Fellowship from the National Health and Medical Research Council at the Institute for Frontier Materials, Deakin University, and her current research focusses on the development of point-of-care electrochemiluminescence sensors for the detection of microRNAs for the diagnosis and management of chronic kidney disease at the point-of-care. Her other research interests include the application of new electro-active materials in electrochemical and electrochemiluminescence sensing applications, design of electrochemical and electrochemiluminescence biosensors and the development point-of-care diagnostics.
