Gretel is a third-year biomedical engineering PhD student from the University of Otago in New Zealand. Her research focuses on developing reconstructive alternatives for women who have undergone mastectomy after breast cancer resection, and generating innovative models of the breast cancer microenvironment to further understand disease progression. Gretel is an active member within her professional society; she is the New Zealand student representative for the Australasian Society of Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering; and is the communication ambassador for the Postgraduate Students of Otago Christchurch. She has also been leading environmental change and sustainability awareness at her University campus through the Christchurch Green Environment and Sustainability Team. Gretel spends much of her spare time tramping in the mountain ranges across the South Island.
