Dr Elder is Māori of Ngāti Kuri, Te Aupouri, Te Rarawa and Ngāpuhi descent. She is the Professor of Indigenous Health Research at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, the Māori Strategic Leader for Brain Research NZ and a Fellow of RANZCP. She is a former Eru Pomare Post-Doctoral Fellow, funded by Health Research Council of New Zealand. Dr Elder’s clinical work is in youth forensic psychiatry and neuropsychiatry. Her PhD and Post-Doc developed recovery approaches for Māori with traumatic brain injury. She is a member of the NZ Mental Health Review Tribunal and Board member of Emerge Aotearoa.
