
Julia Wagemann

Julia is a results-driven strategic advisor, educator and community builder with nearly a decade of experience within the global Earth Observation and geospatial industry. Her work experience spans across intergovernmental organisations, private sector and non-profit organisations on topics that include Big Data, cloud computing, user driven product development, digital transformation, data innovation, open data and open-source development.
As an independent consultant, she works in the intersection of strategy, user engagement and training with the aim to make open (Earth science) data more accessible and used. Since 2019, she has developed more than 100 educational notebooks on climate, atmospheric and machine learning applications and taught several thousands of Earth science data users. Between 2018 and 2022, she founded and scaled the innovation program ECMWF Summer of Weather Code from a pilot to an established annually recurring program.
She initiated and currently serves as co-director of the professional network Women+ in Geospatial, a fast-growing global community with the aim to make the geospatial community more diverse and equal.
Her engagement and contributions to the global geospatial community have been recognised several times. She was listed as Geospatial World 50 Rising Star ‘23, was selected as one of 25 inaugural Google Developer Experts for the Google Earth Engine technology and was featured in the Women in GIS Volume 3 book.
Previously, she worked at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts and the European Space Agency in technical project management roles.
She holds Bachelor and Master degrees in Physical Geography and Geoinformatics from the Philipps University of Marburg. In 2022, she completed a Ph.D. on the topic ‘Big Earth Data – towards a better understanding of users and their training needs’.
