Singaporean Chinese living in Singapore and travels to Lombok, Indonesia much. Kathy Xu is a Singapore-born Chinese with a History degree and a Masters’ in Science Communication.
She runs The Dorsal Effect, an eco-enterprise that provides alternative livelihood through tourism, for shark fishermen in Lombok, Indonesia. Having a background in education, she loves facilitating discussions on shark and marine conservation for students on her self-crafted service-learning trips with The Dorsal Effect to Lombok, to get them to think deeply and widely about the complexity behind shark fishing and marine conservation issues. Being an adjunct lecturer in critical thinking in a few Institutions of Higher Learning in Singapore has broadened her perspective on various social, animal welfare and environmental justice issues.
She appreciates learning from the students from the class discussions and believes open-minded and non-judgmental debates are quintessential in developing critical thinking in young minds. Passionate about retaining the integrity of complex thought in science communication, she believes conservation issues cannot be simplified into easy calls to action, and everyone should play a part in systems change instead.
Kathy hopes to be able to work with a diverse group of women in advancing compassionate science that does not delink animal welfare and the importance of plant-based lifestyles, from marine and terrestrial life conservation.
