Katie’s passion for water and the environment started at a young age. Growing up surrounded by the Laurentian Great Lakes, Katie has always had a deep appreciation for water. She further developed that passion while at school, eventually earning a PhD in aquatic ecology at the University of Waterloo, conducing applied research to assess effects of resource extraction, land use and human development on water quality and biological communities.
Her passion for applied research led her to join a Canadian Startup as a co-founder. Blue Lion Labs works at the intersection of biology and machine learning to analyse harmful organisms in water with the goal of more sustainable management of our water resources. As a cofounder and the COO of the company, Katie is able to further develop her interest in communication, interdisciplinary work and leadership while working at the cutting edge of sustainable technology development.
