Melania grew up in Costa Rica, admiring the human exploration of extreme environments. This interest led her to a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering, work at NASA, and Masters and Doctorate degrees in Oceanography. She held two Researcher appointments at Cornell University and University of Washington, where her research focused on underwater bio-acoustics, quantifying the effects of noise pollution on marine life. She has participated in many oceanographic expeditions to the Arctic Ocean, which sparked her interest in science diplomacy. She is currently a Nippon Fellow at the Division of Ocean Affairs and Law of the Sea at the United Nations.
