MIA CERFONTEYN

PhD Student, Matís ohf.
Iceland, originally from South Africa
Mia studied Zoology in South Africa and did her research in the sub-Antarctic. She spent a year on Marion Island chasing albatrosses which led to a weird infatuation with cold, windy islands. After her adventure she spent some years in the fields of medical biotechnology, offshore consulting and forensic science. However, the majesty of wild, untouched places still tugged at her heart. That’s why she recently moved to Iceland (another cold, windy island) to do her PhD in Marine Microbiology. Mia is an explorer at heart and she believes that she can bring new perspectives to solving issues like gender inequality and climate change.
