Michaela Aschan
Changing Arctic Research School, UiT the Arctic University of Norway
| Michaela is Professor in fisheries biology and management at UiT the Arctic University of Norway, Campus Tromsø. Her research is on the impact of climate change on marine ecosystems and the industries dependent on the living resources in the sea. She likes to work in large transdisciplinary projects that provide solutions to societal challenges e.g. greenhouse gas mitigation and adaptation to climate change in fisheries and aquaculture industries. Michaela kick started and now leads the Changing Arctic Research School with 24 PhD candidates from seven faculties at UiT. She is a passionate teacher and mentor for early career researchers and runs courses and workshops in transferable competences such as ethics of science, proposal writing, career development impact by effective communication, team working and networking.
Michaela is from southern Finland and studied, statistics, philosophy, botany and zoology before she graduated from the University of Helsinki. She has lived more than half of her life in Northern Norway where she has been working as a marine ecologist and assessment biologist. She enjoys cross country and randonnée skiing in her backyard, biking to the university, yoga with colleagues, as well as climbing and painting when the time allows. She loves to cook, throw parties, and arrange live action role games for friends and family with her partner. She adopted two and fostered one child from Ethiopia who now all live with their families in Oslo. |
