Roxanne Nanninga is a dedicated advocate for sustainability in global food systems and motivated by uplifting food producers in coastal and agricultural communities, who are vulnerable to climate change and environmental degradation. She holds a master’s degree in Environmental Management & International Development from Duke University.
She was working as a science teacher when she joined a mission-driven sailing expedition to circumnavigate the Americas. The experience opened her eyes to the fragility of the oceans as well as humanity’s deep, yet unconscious, dependence on it. From here she began to weave her twin passions of marine conservation and sustainable food systems together into a career.
She has led initiatives to restore mangroves by working with coastal shrimp farmers, implement responsible fishing practices for tuna fleets across the Pacific, support farmers with adopting greenhouse gas reducing technologies, and enhance transparency and human rights in seafood supply chains. Driven by the desire to solve problems from different angles, Roxanne has worked in multiple sectors —including seafood corporations, technology startups, financial institutions, and environmental non-profits. She now leads her own consulting firm, Blue Biome Advising, where she supports clients to develop strategies for a more sustainable world.
