Valentina leads a translational, multidisciplinary and diverse research program to identify the core neurobiological mechanisms of addiction & target these using a number of tools:
- novel interventions (e.g., cannabidiol, mindfulness, brain-based feedback)
- advanced multimodal MRI
- global multi-site studies, and
- international expert consensus.
Her program mission is that everyone impacted by addiction deserves the opportunity of better life outcomes.
She is Senior Editor of the prestigious journal Addiction, and co-created the first metric of cannabis potency akin standard drinks – the Standard THC Unit, which has been endorsed by the National Institute of Drug Abuse and other international health organisations.
Valentina’s qualifications include a Bachelor in Behaviour Sciences (2005), a Master’s in Psychology at University of Bologna (2007) and a PhD at The University of Melbourne (2012). She has held postdoctoral research posts across Australia, Brazil and England.
Valentina is now Associate Professor at the Australian Catholic University (2018-current), where she is founding Lead of the Neuroscience of Addiction & Mental Health Program, co-founding Deputy Director of the Healthy Brain and Mind Research Centre.
