Deirdre first studied Human Genetics at Trinity College Dublin in her native Ireland, before travelling and winding up in Perth studying a Masters of Infectious Diseases, then a PhD in Microbiology at the University of Western Australia. Her studies and work have taken her through Aboriginal communities of outback Western Australia, to Papua New Guinea, Malaysia and Indonesia investigating how diseases like cholera and pneumococcal disease spread. Her current research is examining Clostridium difficile infection from a One Health perspective. She is a lover of the great outdoors and is a keen traveler, hiker and horse rider.
