Hilary holds a PhD in Botany from the University of Connecticut and studies species diversity and organellar genome evolution of freshwater green algae. She mentors students in projects characterising the algae of Central New York State, in house rain-gutters of North Carolina, and in freshwater habitats of Iceland. She teaches courses in botany, evolution and environmental issues, and encourages students to seek active roles in addressing climate and environmental issues on campus and at home. Her free time is spent with her family enjoying the outdoors hiking, camping and canoeing.
