Great news, and congratulations to Ximena Aguilar Vega, an alumna of Homeward Bound [Team HB6], on her nomination for the 2024 Shackleton Medal for the Protection of the Polar Regions. Ximena exemplifies unwavering dedication, and commitment to safeguarding our planet’s polar regions, making her an inspiration to us all. Among the company of nominees – scientists, explorers, filmmakers, conservationists, engineers and direct-action environmental campaigners – is world-renowned broadcaster David Attenborough.

Ximena voyaged with Homeward Bound to Antarctica in November 2023 and has a rich history of exploration and discovery to Antarctica, having also voyaged as part of NASA’s IceBridge mission in 2018, and two Antarctic expeditions led by the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH) in 2019 and 2020. Additionally, Ximena is also a photographer who deeply believes in the synergy between science and art as an infallible tool for climate change awareness.

This nomination for the Shackleton Medal stands as a testament to her exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to preserving polar regions. The Royal Geographical Society will decide on the 2024 Shackleton Medal recipient at the end of April.

The Shackleton Medal, a prestigious £10,000 award, was launched on January 5, 2022, marking the centenary of explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton’s death. It honours individuals who safeguard the polar regions he cherished.
